Even if you’re not a fan of traditional meatballs, the luscious onion gravy makes this recipe undeniably delicious!

Kitchen Equipment Needed

  • Large skillet
  • Mixing bowls
  • Baking sheet
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Whisk

Ingredients

For the Meatballs:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

For the French Onion Gravy:

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 cup dry white wine (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 bay leaf
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)

Directions

  1. Preheat Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Prepare the Meatballs:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, milk, egg, garlic powder, onion powder, dried thyme, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.
    • Form the mixture into small meatballs, about 1-inch in diameter.
    • Place the meatballs on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until cooked through.
  3. Prepare the French Onion Gravy:
    • While the meatballs are baking, melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
    • Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are caramelized and golden brown, about 20-25 minutes.
    • Sprinkle the flour over the caramelized onions and stir to combine. Cook for another 2-3 minutes to eliminate the raw flour taste.
    • Slowly add the beef broth and white wine (if using), whisking constantly to prevent lumps.
    • Add the dried thyme, bay leaf, salt, and pepper. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook until the gravy has thickened, about 10 minutes.
    • Remove the bay leaf and adjust seasoning if necessary.
  4. Combine Meatballs and Gravy:
    • Add the baked meatballs to the skillet with the onion gravy.
    • Gently stir to coat the meatballs with the gravy.
    • Simmer for an additional 5-10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
  5. Serve and Garnish:
    • Remove the meatballs from the heat and transfer to a serving dish.
    • Garnish with freshly chopped parsley, if desired.
    • Serve hot over mashed potatoes, pasta, or with crusty bread.

Enjoy these French Onion Meatballs for a comforting and flavorful meal that’s perfect for any night of the week!
