It’s not overly sweet, but just right, making it a delightful choice for those who love a balance of flavors. If you’re looking for a decadent dessert that’s both easy to make and impressive to serve, you’ve come to the right place. This cake’s layers of chocolate cake, gooey caramel, and creamy frosting will surely be a hit with everyone. Not a fan of pecans? Don’t worry, it’s still delicious without them.

Kitchen Equipment Needed:

  • 9×13 inch baking pan
  • Mixing bowls
  • Electric mixer
  • Spatula
  • Saucepan
  • Cooling rack

Ingredients:

For the Cake:

  • 1 box German chocolate cake mix
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup sour cream

For the Filling:

  • 1 cup evaporated milk
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup caramel bits or soft caramel candies
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional)

For the Frosting:

  • 1 package (8 oz) cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional)

Directions:

For the Cake:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking pan.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cake mix, water, vegetable oil, eggs, and sour cream. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes, until well combined and smooth.
  3. Pour half of the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread it evenly.
  4. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes, then remove and let cool slightly.

For the Filling:

  1. In a saucepan, combine the evaporated milk, butter, and brown sugar. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until the mixture comes to a boil.
  2. Remove from heat and stir in the caramel bits or soft caramel candies until melted and smooth.
  3. Pour the caramel mixture over the partially baked cake layer. Sprinkle with chopped pecans if desired.
  4. Pour the remaining cake batter over the caramel layer and spread evenly.

For the Frosting:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and butter together until smooth and creamy.
  2. Gradually add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, beating well after each addition until smooth.
  3. Add the vanilla extract and beat until combined.
  4. Spread the frosting evenly over the cooled cake.
  5. Drizzle the caramel sauce over the frosting and sprinkle with chopped pecans if desired.
