Puff Pastry Cheese Straws are delightfully crisp and flaky with a cheesy, savory flavor that’s simply irresistible. They’re not heavy or overly complicated to make. I think they’re a perfect appetizer for parties or a tasty snack for any occasion, and if you’re not a fan of one of the cheeses, feel free to substitute it with your favorite.

It will still be undeniably delicious! If you’re looking for a light & crispy treat that’s not overly complicated, you’ve come to the right place. When you make puff pastry and pair it with a savory cheese filling & topping, you get the perfect snack. The addition of a pinch of cayenne just sends it over the top. I’ve really been in the mood for flavorful, easy-to-make appetizers, and these cheese straws remind me of festive gatherings and cozy evenings. Not a fan of one of the cheeses? Don’t worry, it’s still delicious with your own twist.

Kitchen Equipment Needed

  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Rolling pin
  • Pastry brush
  • Knife or pizza cutter
  • Grater

Ingredients

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions

  1. Preheat oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Prepare puff pastry: Roll out the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface to smooth any creases and slightly enlarge it.
  3. Add cheese and seasoning: Sprinkle half of the grated cheddar cheese, Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, cayenne pepper (if using), salt, and pepper evenly over the puff pastry.
  4. Fold and roll: Fold the puff pastry sheet in half to enclose the cheese. Roll out the pastry again to about its original size, pressing the cheese into the dough.
  5. Add more cheese: Sprinkle the remaining cheese mixture over the top and gently press it into the dough with the rolling pin.
  6. Cut into strips: Using a knife or pizza cutter, cut the puff pastry into 1/2-inch wide strips.
  7. Twist the strips: Twist each strip several times to create a spiral effect and place them on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them slightly apart.
  8. Egg wash: In a small bowl, beat the egg with water to create an egg wash. Brush the twists lightly with the egg wash.
  9. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the cheese straws are golden brown and puffed.
  10. Cool and serve: Let the cheese straws cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. Serve warm or at room temperature.

These Puff Pastry Cheese Straws are a savory delight that’s perfect for any occasion. Customize them with your favorite cheeses and spices to make them your own!
