Pasta al Forno is a delightfully hearty and comforting baked pasta dish that’s filled with layers of pasta, rich tomato sauce, and melted cheese. It’s not overly heavy or complicated either. I think it’s a perfect dish for a cozy family dinner or a festive gathering, and if you’re not a fan of a particular ingredient, feel free to omit it.

It will still be undeniably delicious! If you’re looking for a warm and satisfying meal that’s not overly rich, you’ve come to the right place. When you make a flavorful tomato sauce and pair it with perfectly cooked pasta and gooey cheese, you get the perfect comfort dish. The addition of fresh herbs just sends it over the top. I’ve really been in the mood for comforting, home-cooked meals and this delicious pasta bake reminds me of family gatherings. Not a fan of a certain cheese? Don’t worry, it’s still delicious with your preferred choices!

Kitchen Equipment Needed:

  • Large pot
  • Colander
  • Large skillet
  • Mixing bowls
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • 9×13 inch baking dish
  • Aluminum foil
  • Grater

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound pasta (ziti, rigatoni, or penne)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound ground beef or turkey (optional, for a vegetarian version you can omit this)
  • 1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 cup ricotta cheese
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh basil or parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Directions:

  1. Cook the Pasta:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the pasta and cook according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. Prepare the Sauce:
    • In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
    • Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
    • If using ground meat, add it to the skillet and cook until browned, breaking it up with a wooden spoon as it cooks.
    • Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, dried oregano, dried basil, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and black pepper. Bring the sauce to a simmer and let it cook for about 15-20 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
  3. Assemble the Pasta al Forno:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked pasta with half of the tomato sauce, stirring to coat the pasta evenly.
    • Spread half of the pasta mixture into the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking dish.
    • Dollop the ricotta cheese over the pasta layer, then sprinkle with half of the shredded mozzarella cheese and half of the grated Parmesan cheese.
    • Spread the remaining pasta mixture over the cheese layer, then top with the remaining tomato sauce.
    • Sprinkle the top with the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.
  4. Bake the Pasta:
    • Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.
    • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the top is lightly golden brown.
  5. Serve:
    • Let the pasta al forno cool for a few minutes before serving.
    • Garnish with fresh basil or parsley and serve warm.

Notes:

  • For a vegetarian version, simply omit the ground meat or replace it with your favorite vegetables such as mushrooms, spinach, or bell peppers.
  • Feel free to use your favorite cheeses if you prefer a different combination.

Pasta al Forno is a classic comfort food that’s sure to please everyone at the table. Enjoy!
