- Fresh basil or parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Directions:
- Cook the Pasta:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the pasta and cook according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- Prepare the Sauce:
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.

- If using ground meat, add it to the skillet and cook until browned, breaking it up with a wooden spoon as it cooks.
- Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, dried oregano, dried basil, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and black pepper. Bring the sauce to a simmer and let it cook for about 15-20 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

- Spread half of the pasta mixture into the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- Dollop the ricotta cheese over the pasta layer, then sprinkle with half of the shredded mozzarella cheese and half of the grated Parmesan cheese.
- Spread the remaining pasta mixture over the cheese layer, then top with the remaining tomato sauce.
- Sprinkle the top with the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.
- Bake the Pasta:
- Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the top is lightly golden brown.
- Serve:
- Let the pasta al forno cool for a few minutes before serving.
- Garnish with fresh basil or parsley and serve warm.
Notes:
- For a vegetarian version, simply omit the ground meat or replace it with your favorite vegetables such as mushrooms, spinach, or bell peppers.
- Feel free to use your favorite cheeses if you prefer a different combination.
