Pan Fried Cod with Lemon Butter Sauce is a simple yet elegant dish that’s bursting with fresh, zesty flavors. It’s not heavy or overly complicated either. I think it’s a perfect anytime meal, and if you’re not a fan of cod, feel free to use another white fish like tilapia or halibut.

It will still be undeniably delicious! If you’re looking for a light & easy dish that’s not overly complicated, you’ve come to the right place. When you make a tender, flaky cod and pair it with a tangy, buttery lemon sauce you get the perfect meal. The addition of fresh herbs just sends it over the top. I’ve really been in the mood for light, refreshing dishes and this dreamy cod reminds me of summer and fresh, vibrant flavors. Not a fan of cod? Don’t worry, it’s still delicious with other white fish too.

Kitchen Equipment Needed

  • Cutting board
  • Knife
  • Skillet
  • Spatula
  • Small saucepan
  • Whisk
  • Lemon zester

Ingredients

  • 4 cod fillets
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • Juice and zest of 1 lemon
  • 1/4 cup chicken broth or white wine
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped

Directions

  1. Prep the Cod: Pat the cod fillets dry with paper towels and season with salt and pepper. Lightly dredge the fillets in flour, shaking off any excess.
  2. Cook the Cod: Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the cod fillets and cook until golden brown and cooked through, about 3-4 minutes per side. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Make the Sauce: In the same skillet, reduce the heat to medium and add the butter. Once melted, add the garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute. Stir in the lemon juice, zest, and chicken broth (or white wine). Simmer for 2-3 minutes until slightly reduced.
  4. Finish the Dish: Return the cod fillets to the skillet, spooning the sauce over the top. Cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until warmed through. Sprinkle with fresh parsley before serving.
