Kitchen Equipment Needed:
- Large skillet or frying pan
- Pot for boiling potatoes
- Potato masher or ricer
- Baking dish
Ingredients:
- 1 lb ground beef or lamb
- 1 onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 carrots, diced
- 1 cup frozen peas
- 1 cup beef or vegetable broth
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 4 large potatoes, peeled and chopped
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/2 cup grated cheddar cheese (optional)
- Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish
Directions:
- Prepare the Mashed Potatoes: Place the chopped potatoes in a pot of salted water and bring to a boil. Cook until tender, then drain and return to the pot. Add butter and milk to the potatoes, then mash or rice until smooth and creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Set aside.
- Cook the Filling: In a large skillet or frying pan, cook the ground beef or lamb over medium heat until browned and no longer pink. Add diced onion and minced garlic, cooking until softened and fragrant. Stir in diced carrots and frozen peas, cooking until vegetables are tender.
- Add Flavor: Pour in the beef or vegetable broth, tomato paste, and Worcestershire sauce, stirring well to combine. Allow the mixture to simmer for a few minutes until the sauce thickens slightly. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Assemble the Pie: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Transfer the cooked meat and vegetable mixture to a baking dish, spreading it out evenly. Top with the creamy mashed potatoes, spreading them over the filling to cover completely. If desired, sprinkle grated cheddar cheese on top for extra richness.
- Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the Shepherd’s Pie is heated through and the top is golden brown and slightly crispy.
- Serve: Remove the Shepherd’s Pie from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Sprinkle chopped fresh parsley over the top for a pop of color and freshness. Serve hot and enjoy the comforting flavors of this homemade classic.
