I think it’s a perfect weeknight dinner, and if you’re not a fan of ground beef, feel free to use ground turkey or chicken. It will still be undeniably delicious!

If you’re looking for a quick & easy dinner that’s packed with flavor, you’ve come to the right place. When you make tender ground beef and pair it with a sweet and tangy sauce, you get the perfect meal. The addition of green onions just sends it over the top. I’ve really been in the mood for a satisfying and comforting dinner, and this dish reminds me of cozy family meals. Not a fan of ground beef? Don’t worry, it’s still delicious with other meats.

Kitchen Equipment Needed

  • Large skillet or wok
  • Mixing bowls
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Cutting board
  • Knife

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 4 green onions, chopped
  • Cooked rice, for serving
  • Sesame seeds, for garnish (optional)

Directions

  1. Cook the Ground Beef:
    • Heat a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, until browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess fat.
  2. Prepare the Sauce:
    • In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, brown sugar, water, and cornstarch until well combined. Set aside.
  3. Cook the Aromatics:
    • Push the cooked ground beef to one side of the skillet. Add the vegetable oil to the empty side, then add the minced garlic and grated ginger. Cook for about 1 minute, until fragrant.
  4. Combine Beef and Sauce:
    • Stir the garlic and ginger into the ground beef. Pour the prepared sauce over the beef, stirring to combine. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for about 2-3 minutes, until the sauce thickens and coats the beef.
  5. Add Green Onions and Serve:
    • Stir in the chopped green onions and cook for an additional minute. Remove from heat and serve the Mongolian ground beef over cooked rice. Garnish with sesame seeds if desired.
