Fried Red Tomatoes

Fried Red Tomatoes are a delightfully crispy and savory treat that’s perfectly seasoned and fried to a golden brown. They’re not heavy or overly greasy either. I think they’re a perfect summertime appetizer or side dish, and if you’re not a fan of the traditional green tomatoes, feel free to use these red ones instead. They will still be undeniably delicious! If you’re looking for a light & savory snack that’s not overly heavy, you’ve come to the right place.

When you fry slices of juicy red tomatoes in a perfectly seasoned coating, you get the perfect bite. The addition of a hint of spice just sends it over the top. I’ve really been in the mood for something savory and crispy, and these dreamy tomatoes remind me of summer gatherings. Not a fan of the usual green tomatoes? Don’t worry, they’re still delicious with red ones.

Kitchen Equipment Needed:

  • Cutting board
  • Sharp knife
  • Mixing bowls
  • Shallow dish or plate
  • Skillet
  • Tongs
  • Paper towels

Ingredients:

  • 4 medium red tomatoes, sliced 1/4 inch thick
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Directions:

  1. Prepare the Tomatoes:
    • Slice the red tomatoes into 1/4 inch thick slices. Lay them out on a paper towel and pat dry to remove excess moisture.
  2. Prepare the Coating:
    • In a shallow dish or plate, combine the flour, cornmeal, salt, black pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper (if using).
    • In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk until well combined.
  3. Coat the Tomatoes:
    • Dip each tomato slice into the flour mixture, then into the egg mixture, and back into the flour mixture, making sure each slice is well coated.
  4. Fry the Tomatoes:
    • Heat about 1/2 inch of vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat until hot (about 350°F or 175°C).
    • Carefully place the coated tomato slices into the hot oil in a single layer, without overcrowding the pan.
    • Fry each side for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Use tongs to flip the slices and fry the other side.
  5. Drain and Serve:
    • Remove the fried tomatoes from the skillet and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.
    • Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce or as a side dish.

Enjoy:

These Fried Red Tomatoes are a crispy, savory delight perfect for any occasion. Enjoy the juicy, flavorful tomatoes paired with the perfectly seasoned, crispy coating for a truly delightful treat.
