This French Onion Meatloaf combines the hearty comfort of traditional meatloaf with the rich, savory flavors of French onion soup. Topped with melty cheese and a golden glaze, this dish is a standout for any meal.

Ingredients

For the Meatloaf: 1 1/2 pounds ground beef, 1 cup French onion soup mix (powdered) or 1 envelope of French onion soup mix, 1/2 cup breadcrumbs, 2 large eggs, 1/4 cup milk, 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese, 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

For the Glaze: 1/3 cup ketchup, 2 tablespoons brown sugar, 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

For the Topping: 1 cup shredded Swiss or Gruyere cheese, Optional: Sautéed onions for garnish

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a loaf pan. In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, French onion soup mix, breadcrumbs, eggs, milk, Parmesan cheese, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix until just combined; avoid overmixing. Transfer the mixture to the prepared loaf pan, shaping it into a loaf.

In a small bowl, mix together ketchup, brown sugar, and Dijon mustard. Spread the glaze evenly over the meatloaf.

Place the meatloaf in the oven and bake for 45 minutes. Remove from the oven, sprinkle shredded cheese over the top, and return to the oven. Bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the meatloaf reaches an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C).

Allow the meatloaf to rest for 10 minutes before slicing. Garnish with sautéed onions, if desired, and serve hot.

Tips for Success

For a deeper onion flavor, add caramelized onions to the meat mixture. If you prefer a firmer texture, reduce the milk slightly. Use a meat thermometer to ensure the meatloaf is cooked perfectly without overbaking.

Serving Suggestions

Pair this French Onion Meatloaf with mashed potatoes, green beans, or a fresh salad for a complete and satisfying meal.

Storage and Reheating

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat slices in the microwave or in the oven at 350°F (175°C) until warmed through.

This recipe brings a delightful twist to a family favorite, making it a must-try for anyone who loves bold, savory flavors!
