Kitchen Equipment Needed:
- Large pot
- Knife and cutting board
- Mixing bowls
- Cheese grater
- Baking dish (9×13 inches)
- Saucepan
- Whisk
- Wooden spoon
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Oven
Ingredients:
- 4 large russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)
Directions:
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish and set aside.
- Prepare Potatoes: Peel and thinly slice the russet potatoes. Place the slices in a large pot, cover with water, and bring to a boil. Cook for 5-7 minutes, until just tender but not fully cooked. Drain and set aside.
- Make the Cheese Sauce: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the flour and whisk continuously for about 2 minutes to form a roux. Gradually add the milk and heavy cream, whisking until the mixture is smooth and thickened, about 5-7 minutes.
- Add Cheese: Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the cheddar cheese, Gruyère cheese, salt, black pepper, and nutmeg until the cheese is fully melted and the sauce is smooth.
- Assemble the Dish: In the prepared baking dish, layer half of the potato slices. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes, spreading it evenly. Repeat with the remaining potatoes and cheese sauce.
- Top and Bake: In a small bowl, mix together the grated Parmesan cheese and breadcrumbs. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the top of the casserole. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, until the top is golden brown and crispy.
- Garnish and Serve: Let the dish cool slightly before serving. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired.
