Delmonico Potatoes are a delightfully creamy and cheesy side dish that’s rich and indulgent without being overly heavy. This classic American dish, named after the famous Delmonico’s restaurant in New York, features tender potatoes baked in a luscious cheese sauce, topped with a golden, crispy crust.

It’s a perfect comfort food for any occasion, whether you’re hosting a dinner party or just craving something warm and satisfying. If you’re looking for a versatile and crowd-pleasing side dish, you’ve come to the right place. The combination of creamy potatoes and a crisp topping makes this dish irresistible. Not a fan of overly cheesy dishes? Don’t worry, you can adjust the cheese to your liking and it will still be incredibly delicious!

Kitchen Equipment Needed:

  • Large pot
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Mixing bowls
  • Cheese grater
  • Baking dish (9×13 inches)
  • Saucepan
  • Whisk
  • Wooden spoon
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Oven

Ingredients:

  • 4 large russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)

Directions:

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish and set aside.
  2. Prepare Potatoes: Peel and thinly slice the russet potatoes. Place the slices in a large pot, cover with water, and bring to a boil. Cook for 5-7 minutes, until just tender but not fully cooked. Drain and set aside.
  3. Make the Cheese Sauce: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the flour and whisk continuously for about 2 minutes to form a roux. Gradually add the milk and heavy cream, whisking until the mixture is smooth and thickened, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Add Cheese: Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the cheddar cheese, Gruyère cheese, salt, black pepper, and nutmeg until the cheese is fully melted and the sauce is smooth.
  5. Assemble the Dish: In the prepared baking dish, layer half of the potato slices. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes, spreading it evenly. Repeat with the remaining potatoes and cheese sauce.
  6. Top and Bake: In a small bowl, mix together the grated Parmesan cheese and breadcrumbs. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the top of the casserole. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, until the top is golden brown and crispy.
  7. Garnish and Serve: Let the dish cool slightly before serving. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired.

Enjoy your delicious Delmonico Potatoes!
