Copycat Whataburger Patty Melt is a mouthwatering sandwich that perfectly combines juicy beef patties, melted cheese, and caramelized onions, all nestled between slices of buttery Texas toast. It’s not heavy or overly greasy, making it an ideal choice for a hearty yet balanced meal.

If you’re craving a satisfying and savory sandwich, you’ve come to the right place. When you make perfectly seasoned beef patties and pair them with gooey cheese and sweet, caramelized onions, you get the perfect patty melt. The addition of a tangy, creamy sauce just sends it over the top. I’ve really been in the mood for some comfort food, and this classic sandwich brings that cozy diner experience right into your kitchen. Not a fan of onions? Don’t worry, it’s still delicious without them.

Kitchen Equipment Needed

  • Large skillet or griddle
  • Spatula
  • Mixing bowls
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Small saucepan

Ingredients

For the Patty Melt:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 8 slices Texas toast
  • 8 slices American cheese
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 tablespoons butter, divided

For the Sauce:

  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder

Directions

  1. Prepare the Onions:
    • In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter.
    • Add the thinly sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until caramelized, about 15-20 minutes. Set aside.
  2. Prepare the Sauce:
    • In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, ketchup, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder. Set aside.
  3. Cook the Patties:
    • Divide the ground beef into four equal portions and shape into patties. Season with salt and pepper.
    • In the same skillet used for the onions, cook the patties over medium-high heat until browned and cooked through, about 4-5 minutes per side. Remove from heat and set aside.
  4. Assemble the Patty Melts:
    • Spread the remaining butter on one side of each slice of Texas toast.
    • Place a slice of cheese on the unbuttered side of four slices of bread.
    • Top each with a cooked beef patty, caramelized onions, and another slice of cheese.
    • Spread a generous amount of sauce on the unbuttered side of the remaining slices of bread and place on top, buttered side up.
  5. Cook the Patty Melts:
    • Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat.
    • Cook the assembled sandwiches until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted, about 2-3 minutes per side.

Enjoy this Copycat Whataburger Patty Melt as a deliciously satisfying classic that brings the taste of a beloved fast-food favorite right to your kitchen!
