Kitchen Equipment Needed:

  1. Large wok or skillet
  2. Mixing bowls
  3. Whisk
  4. Chef’s knife
  5. Cutting board

Ingredients:

For the Chow Mein Sauce:

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup chicken broth or water

For the Chicken Chow Mein:

  • 8 ounces chow mein noodles (or substitute with spaghetti)
  • 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, minced
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 carrot, julienned
  • 1 cup cabbage, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup bean sprouts
  • 2 green onions, chopped (for garnish)
  • Sesame seeds (for garnish, optional)

Directions:

  1. Prepare the Chow Mein Sauce: In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, brown sugar, sesame oil, cornstarch, and chicken broth or water until well combined. Set aside.
  2. Cook the Noodles: Cook the chow mein noodles according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  3. Stir-Fry the Chicken: Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large wok or skillet over medium-high heat. Add the sliced chicken breasts and stir-fry until cooked through and no longer pink, about 5-6 minutes. Remove the chicken from the wok and set aside.
  4. Prepare the Vegetables: In the same wok or skillet, heat the remaining tablespoon of vegetable oil. Add the minced garlic and ginger, and stir-fry for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Add the sliced onion, red bell pepper, julienned carrot, and thinly sliced cabbage. Stir-fry for 3-4 minutes until the vegetables are crisp-tender.
  5. Combine the Ingredients: Return the cooked chicken to the wok. Add the cooked chow mein noodles and bean sprouts to the wok, tossing everything together until well combined.
  6. Add the Sauce: Pour the prepared Chow Mein Sauce over the chicken and noodles in the wok. Toss to coat evenly and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken and coat the ingredients.
  7. Garnish and Serve: Remove the Chicken Chow Mein from the heat. Garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds, if desired. Serve hot and enjoy the delicious flavors of this homemade stir-fry dish!
