Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 2 cups cooked rice Use short-grain rice for the best texture.
  • 1/2 cup cooked vegetables Choose from carrots, peas, or bell peppers.
  • 1/4 cup cooked protein Options include chicken, tuna, or tofu.
  • 2 tbsp sesame oil This gives a rich nutty flavor.
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce Ensure you use a halal-certified brand.
  • to taste Salt Adjust based on your preference.
  • Nori sheets (seaweed) for wrapping Adds a delicious umami twist.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Begin by cooking the rice according to package instructions until it's fluffy and tender. Once cooked, let it cool slightly.
  • In a large bowl, combine the cooked rice, chopped vegetables, chosen protein, sesame oil, soy sauce, and salt. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly combined.
  • With damp hands (to prevent sticking), take a handful of the rice mixture and form it into a tight ball, roughly the size of a golf ball. Repeat until all the mixture is used up.
  • Cut the nori sheets into smaller strips. Take one rice ball and wrap it with a strip of nori, pressing gently to adhere.
  • Your Tasty Korean Rice Balls (Jumeokbap) are ready! Serve them fresh, or pack them for lunch with a side of dipping sauce.

Notes

You can easily swap the protein with halal-friendly options like shredded chicken or plant-based proteins like tempeh or edamame for variety. Avoid overcooking the rice, as it might turn mushy. Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or freeze them for up to a month. Thaw in the fridge overnight and reheat in the microwave.
