Ingredients
  

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened At room temperature for best mixing.
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg At room temperature.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Topping

  • to taste Sugar for sprinkling on top (sparkling sugar works beautifully)

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set this mixture aside.
  • In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
  • Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well incorporated.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Avoid over-mixing.
  • Roll the dough into small balls (about 1 inch in diameter), then flatten slightly or use cookie cutters to make tree shapes.
  • Place the cookies on the prepared baking sheet and sprinkle generously with sparkling sugar.

Baking

  • Bake in your preheated oven for 10-12 minutes or until the edges turn lightly golden.
  • Remove from the oven and allow to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Ensure butter and egg are at room temperature for better texture. Chill the dough if it's too sticky to shape. Experiment with different extracts for added flavor.
