Ingredients

Main ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast 1 packet
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water about 110°F
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil optional, for added richness

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.
  • Once the yeast has activated, pour it into the flour mixture along with the olive oil (if using). Mix until a dough forms.
  • On a lightly floured surface, knead the dough for about 8-10 minutes, or until it's smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover it with a damp cloth. Let it rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
  • Punch down the dough to release air, then shape it into a loaf. Place it in a greased loaf pan.
  • Cover the loaf again and let it rise for an additional 30 minutes.
  • While the loaf is rising, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the top is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  • Allow the bread to cool for a few minutes before slicing into the fluffy goodness.
