Ingredients

Main ingredients

  • 3-4 lb beef chuck roast
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup beef broth Choose Halal-friendly if needed.
  • 1 cup French onion soup
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon thyme Fresh herbs can be used instead of dried.
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • French bread or baguette for serving
  • Gruyere cheese (optional) for topping Adds richness.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Start by slicing your onions and mincing the garlic. The thin slices will ensure they caramelize beautifully during cooking.
  • Optional: Sear the beef chuck roast in a skillet over medium-high heat for about 5 minutes on each side until browned for deeper flavor.

Cooking

  • In the slow cooker, place the sliced onions at the bottom.
  • Lay the seasoned chuck roast on top, then sprinkle the minced garlic and thyme.
  • Pour the beef broth and French onion soup over the roast, ensuring that the meat is well covered. Add salt and pepper to taste.
  • Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 8-10 hours or on high for 4-6 hours until the beef is tender and easily shreds with a fork.
  • Once finished, shred the beef directly in the pot or remove it carefully to serve whole. Best enjoyed with slices of French bread or baguette and topped with Gruyere cheese if desired.

Notes

For a Halal-friendly option, ensure beef broth meets Halal standards. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days or freeze portions for up to 3 months. Reheat gently on the stove or in the slow cooker.
