- 4 large apples Honeycrisp or Granny Smith work well
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter softened
- 1/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts optional
- 1/2 cup apple juice or water for the slow cooker base
Prepare the Apples:
Wash the apples and use a paring knife to remove the core, creating a hollow cavity in the center without cutting through the bottom. Slice down the sides of each apple to create "petals," being careful not to cut all the way through.
Make the Filling:
In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar, cinnamon, and softened butter. If desired, stir in the chopped nuts for extra texture and flavor.
Fill the Apples:
Stuff the brown sugar mixture into the hollowed-out center of each apple. Distribute the remaining mixture into the spaces between the petals.
Prepare the Slow Cooker:
Pour the apple juice or water into the bottom of the slow cooker to create a moist cooking environment.
Cook the Apples:
Place the apples into the slow cooker and cover with the lid. Cook on low for 3–4 hours or until the apples are tender and easily pierced with a fork.
Serve:
Carefully remove the apples from the slow cooker using a large spoon. Serve warm with your choice of toppings.
