Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 4 large potatoes (russet or Yukon gold), peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (or your favorite halal cheese)
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened for greasing the baking dish
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Fresh parsley or chives, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Grease a large baking dish with the softened butter to prevent sticking.
  • Begin layering half of the sliced potatoes at the bottom of the dish.
  • Sprinkle half of the chopped onions over them, then season with salt, pepper, and a dash of garlic powder.
  • Pour half of the heavy cream over the first layer, followed by half of the cheddar and Parmesan.
  • Add the remaining potatoes and onions, season again with salt and pepper.
  • Finish with the rest of the heavy cream and cheeses.
  • Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 40 minutes.
  • After 40 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 20 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
  • Let rest for a few minutes before serving.
  • Garnish with fresh parsley or chives for a pop of color.

Notes

To make a healthier version, consider substituting half and half in place of heavy cream. Allowing the dish to rest after baking helps it set properly. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or freeze for up to two months.
