  • 1 lb shrimp, peeled and deveined Fresh or properly stored frozen shrimp
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 1 cup cream Heavy cream preferred for richness
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup chicken or vegetable broth Use low-sodium if preferred
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Chopped fresh parsley (for garnish)

Preparation

  • Start by rinsing the shrimp under cold water, then pat them dry with a paper towel.
  • In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter.
  • Once the butter is melted, sprinkle in the flour and whisk to create a roux. Cook for about 2 minutes until lightly golden.
  • Gradually whisk in the chicken or vegetable broth, ensuring there are no lumps.
  • As the mixture thickens, slowly add the milk and cream while whisking to blend well.
  • Add in garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper to taste. Allow the sauce to simmer for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Toss in the prepared shrimp, cooking for another 3-5 minutes or until the shrimp turn pink and opaque.
  • Spoon the Shrimp Newburg mixture over rice or enjoy it on its own, garnished with fresh parsley.

Notes

For best results, ensure shrimp quality is high and avoid overcooking. You may substitute seafood or add vegetables as desired. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days or freeze for 2 months.
