Ingredients
  

Meat mixture

  • 1 lb ground beef or lamb
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste Salt and pepper
  • Olive oil for cooking Olive oil

Vegetables

  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 cups peas (fresh or frozen)

Topping

  • 2 cups mashed potatoes For a creamier topping, mix in butter or milk.

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • In a skillet, heat some olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and diced carrots. Cook until they are softened.
  • Add the ground beef or lamb to the skillet. Cook until the meat is browned.
  • Stir in the peas, beef broth, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
  • Let the mixture simmer for 5-10 minutes until it thickens.

Assembly

  • Transfer the meat mixture to a baking dish, spreading it evenly.
  • Top the meat mixture with the mashed potatoes, spreading them over the top.

Baking

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until the potatoes are golden brown.

Serving

  • Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

Shepherd's Pie is best served warm right out of the oven and pairs well with a simple salad. It can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 2 months. To reheat, warm in the oven until heated through. Consider adding herbs like thyme or rosemary for extra flavor, or a pinch of chili flakes for heat.
