Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour Make sure to sift for a light texture.
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder Unsweetened is best to balance the sweetness.

Wet Ingredients

  • 2 eggs
  • 1 ¾ cups milk For a dairy-free version, swap with almond or oat milk.
  • cup sugar
  • ½ cup vegetable oil Use plant-based oil for dairy-free version.
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon red food coloring Use gel coloring for a more vivid hue.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your waffle iron following the manufacturer's instructions.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients: flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder until combined.
  • In another bowl, whisk together the wet ingredients: eggs, milk, sugar, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract until smooth. Then add the red food coloring, mixing well until you achieve the desired shade.
  • Slowly pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients. Stir gently until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
  • Ladle the batter onto the preheated waffle iron, using half of it for the traditional batter and mixing half with a little extra food coloring for the marbling effect.
  • Close the lid of the waffle iron and cook according to the manufacturer's directions or until the waffles are golden and crispy.
  • Serve warm topped with your favorite toppings like syrup, whipped cream, or chocolate chips.

Notes

If you have leftovers (which is unlikely), refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 2 months. Reheat in a toaster or oven at 350°F until warmed through.
