Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 package frozen pierogi
  • 1 pound cooked sausage, sliced (consider halal turkey or chicken sausage)
  • 1 cup onion, chopped
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup chicken broth (check for halal compliance)
  • to taste Salt and pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil for sautéing

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a large skillet, heat a tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté for about 5-7 minutes or until they turn translucent and soft.
  • Add your sliced sausage to the skillet and cook for an additional 3-5 minutes, stirring occasionally until it’s heated through. Season with salt and pepper.
  • In a large bowl, combine the cooked sausage and onions with the frozen pierogi, sour cream, and chicken broth. Mix gently until well incorporated.
  • In a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, layer half of the pierogi mixture at the bottom. Sprinkle with half of the shredded cheddar cheese. Add the remaining pierogi mixture on top, and finish by adding the rest of the cheese.
  • Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 5-10 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
  • Let it cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

You can use any halal sausage or omit it for a vegetarian version. Consider swapping cheddar for mozzarella or a blend of cheeses for added flavor. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days, or freeze for up to 3 months. Reheat in the oven for best results.
