Ingredients

Main ingredients

  • 2 large Onions
  • 1 cup All-purpose flour Seasoned with salt and pepper
  • 1 cup Breadcrumbs Combined with half of the shredded cheese
  • 1 cup Shredded cheese e.g., cheddar or mozzarella
  • 2 large Eggs Beaten
  • Salt and pepper To taste
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

Preparation

  • Peel the onions and slice them into ½-inch thick rings. Separate the rings and set them aside.
  • Set up a breading station: In three separate bowls, place the flour seasoned with salt and pepper in the first, beat the eggs in the second, and fill the third with breadcrumbs combined with half of the shredded cheese.

Bread the Onion Rings

  • Take one onion ring and dip it into the flour, coating it lightly. Next, immerse it in the beaten eggs, allowing any excess to drip off. Finally, dredge the ring in the breadcrumb mixture, pressing lightly to ensure it sticks. Repeat until all rings are coated.

Cooking

  • In a large, deep skillet, heat the oil over medium-high heat. Once hot, carefully add the onion rings in batches, avoiding overcrowding.
  • Fry for 3-4 minutes or until they are golden brown, flipping as needed for even cooking.

Serving

  • Remove the fried onion rings and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  • Sprinkle the remaining cheese on top while they are still hot. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free flour and breadcrumbs. Fry in small batches to achieve an evenly cooked texture. Ensure the oil is hot before frying to avoid soggy rings. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheat in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for 10-15 minutes.
