Ingredients
  

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon espresso powder

Wet Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 cup milk or cream Milk can be substituted with cream for a richer flavor.
  • 1 large egg

Add-ins

  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips For extra richness, consider using dark chocolate chips as well.

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, and espresso powder until well combined.
  • Cut in the cold cubed butter using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk and egg until blended.
  • Pour the milk mixture into the dry ingredients and stir gently until just combined. Fold in the chocolate chips.
  • Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and gently knead it a few times to bring it together.
  • Pat the dough into a circle about 1-inch thick. Cut into wedges and place them on the prepared baking sheet.

Baking

  • Bake for 15-18 minutes or until the scones are lightly golden brown on top.
  • Allow cooling slightly before serving, and enjoy!

Notes

For an extra boost of chocolate flavor, try using dark chocolate chips or a mixture of chocolate types. Ensure your butter is cold when cutting it into the flour to keep the scones flaky. If the dough is sticky, add flour as needed or chill before cutting. Don't overmix the dough.
