  • 1 sheet flaky puff pastry (thawed)
  • 1 cup your choice of filling (chocolate hazelnut spread, cream cheese, or fruit preserves) Prepare fillings in advance.
  • 1 large egg (beaten, for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (optional, for sprinkling)
  • 1 pinch salt

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (204°C) to ensure a perfectly crisp pastry.
  • Roll out your thawed puff pastry sheet on a clean, floured surface to about 1/8 inch thickness.
  • Cut the pastry into strips about 1 inch wide and 4 inches long for smaller appetizers.
  • Place a spoonful of your chosen filling at one end of each strip, then fold the pastry over the filling.
  • Carefully twist the strip to create the 'twist' shape and press down the ends to seal them securely.
  • Brush each twist with the beaten egg to give them a beautiful golden color when baked.
  • Sprinkle sugar on top before baking if you like a little extra sweetness.
  • Place the twists on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for about 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
  • Cool them on a wire rack for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

Substitutions: If you don’t have puff pastry, consider using phyllo dough layered with melted butter. Keep an eye on baking twists to achieve perfect color.
