Ingredients

For the Base

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Ensure butter is at room temperature.
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Salted Caramel

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.
  • In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Add the flour, salt, and vanilla extract, then mix until just combined.
  • Press the dough evenly into the prepared baking dish. Bake in the preheated oven for about 15-20 minutes, or until it’s lightly golden.
  • While the base is baking, combine the brown sugar, heavy cream, and butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves and the mixture comes to a gentle boil. Allow it to simmer for about 3-5 minutes, stirring constantly, until the caramel thickens.
  • Remove the caramel from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and sea salt. Pour the warm caramel over the baked base, spreading it evenly.
  • Return to the oven for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the caramel is bubbly and golden.
  • Allow the bars to cool completely in the pan before cutting them into squares. Enjoy!
