Ingredients
  

Dry Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour plus additional for dusting
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1.75 cups buttermilk Make your own by mixing 1 cup of milk with 1 tablespoon of vinegar and letting it sit for 5 minutes.

Optional Ingredients

  • 0.5 cups raisins or currants for sweetness (optional)

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, and salt. Whisk until well blended.
  • Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the buttermilk. If using raisins or currants, add them now. Gently mix until all flour is moistened.
  • Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead lightly until it comes together. Shape it into a round loaf.
  • Transfer the shaped loaf to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Score a deep cross on the top with a sharp knife.

Baking

  • Bake the bread in the preheated oven for about 30 minutes or until the loaf sounds hollow when tapped and is golden brown.
  • Let it cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

Store Irish Soda Bread in an airtight container at room temperature for 2-3 days, or tightly wrap and freeze for up to three months. To reheat, let thaw at room temperature or pop in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for a few minutes.
