Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Should be at room temperature.
  • 1 ½ cups white sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon almond extract (optional) For added flavor.

Topping

  • 3-4 tablespoons sugar for sprinkling To sprinkle on top before baking.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.
  • In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using) until fully incorporated.
  • Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients. Stir until just combined.

Baking

  • Roll the dough into balls about 1 inch in diameter and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  • Sprinkle a little sugar on top of each cookie for that classic sweetness.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes, or until they are lightly golden around the edges.
  • Let cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

For richer flavor, consider adding a pinch of salt or a tablespoon of milk to your dough. Avoid overbaking; the cookies may look slightly underdone but will firm up as they cool. Store leftover cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week or freeze for up to three months.
