Ingredients

  • For the Dough:
  • 1 package 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water 110°F/43°C
  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • For the Filling:
  • 1/2 lb sliced pepperoni
  • 1/2 lb sliced ham or cooked Italian sausage
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 cup sliced black olives optional
  • 1/4 cup diced bell peppers optional
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes optional
  • For the Egg Wash:
  • 1 egg beaten
  • 1 tablespoon water

Instructions

  • Activate the Yeast:
  • In a small bowl, combine the warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  • Make the Dough:
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Gradually add the yeast mixture and olive oil, mixing until a dough forms. Knead the dough for about 8-10 minutes until smooth. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
  • Prepare the Filling:
  • In a large bowl, mix together the pepperoni, ham or sausage, mozzarella cheese, Parmesan cheese, olives (if using), bell peppers (if using), Italian seasoning, and red pepper flakes (if using).
  • Roll Out the Dough:
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). On a floured surface, roll out the dough into a large rectangle (about 12x16 inches).
  • Assemble the Stromboli:
  • Evenly spread the filling mixture over the rolled-out dough, leaving a small border around the edges. Carefully roll the dough tightly from one long side to the other, forming a log. Pinch the seams together to seal.
  • Brush with Egg Wash:
  • Place the stromboli seam-side down on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the entire surface with the beaten egg mixed with water for a golden finish.
  • Bake:
  • Bake the stromboli for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown. Let it cool slightly before slicing.
  • Serve:
  • Serve the stromboli warm with marinara sauce on the side for dipping.
  • This Homemade Stromboli is packed with delicious flavors and crispy on the outside, making it a hit at any gathering or weeknight meal!
