Ingredients

Dough Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups warm water (110°F to 115°F)
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • cup baking soda (for boiling solution)
  • 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Toppings

  • Coarse salt (for sprinkling)
  • Optional: melted butter for brushing

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Allow it to sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  • Stir in the flour and salt. Mix until a dough forms.
  • Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5 to 7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough back in the bowl, cover it with a towel, and let it rise for about 30 minutes, or until it has doubled in size.

Boiling and Baking

  • In a large pot, bring water to a boil and add baking soda.
  • Once risen, divide the dough into smaller pieces and roll each piece into a rope about 10 inches long. Cut each rope into bite-sized pieces.
  • Carefully drop a few pretzel bites into the boiling solution for about 30 seconds. Remove them using a slotted spoon and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  • Brush the bites with the beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse salt. Bake in a preheated oven at 425°F for about 10-12 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Let them cool for a minute and serve with your favorite dipping sauces, if desired!

Notes

To preserve the deliciousness, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. They freeze well for up to a month. Reheat in a preheated oven at 350°F for about 5 minutes.
