Ingredients
  

Dry Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda Ensure it's fresh
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 ⅔ cups buttermilk Alternatively, use homemade buttermilk with milk and vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter Optional for richer flavor

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
  • Pour the buttermilk into the flour mixture. Add the melted butter if desired.
  • Mix with a wooden spoon or your hands until a shaggy dough forms; do not overmix.
  • On a lightly floured surface, knead the dough gently for about 30 seconds until smooth and slightly elastic. Shape into a round loaf.
  • Transfer the loaf to the baking sheet and score a shallow cross on the top with a sharp knife.

Baking

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  • Let the bread cool on a wire rack for about 10 minutes before slicing.

Notes

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature or briefly heat in the oven before serving.
