Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 2 cups fresh blackberries (or frozen, if preferred) Use fresh for the best flavor.
  • 0.5 cups granulated sugar Adjust sweetness to taste.
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice Adds brightness to the sauce.
  • 1 tablespoon water Helps to create the sauce consistency.
  • 0.5 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional) For additional flavor.
  • 1 pinch salt Enhances the overall flavor.

Instructions

Preparation

  • If using fresh blackberries, rinse them thoroughly under cold water and drain. If using frozen blackberries, there's no need to thaw them beforehand.

Cooking

  • In a medium saucepan, combine the blackberries, sugar, lemon juice, water, and salt. Stir gently to mix without smashing the berries.
  • Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring to a gentle simmer. Stir occasionally, allowing the blackberries to release their juices and the sugar to dissolve, about 8-10 minutes.
  • Once simmered, use a potato masher or fork to gently mash the blackberries to your desired consistency, simmering for another 5 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and let cool slightly; add vanilla extract if desired.

Storage

  • Allow the sauce to cool completely before transferring to an airtight jar. Refrigerate for up to one week or freeze for longer storage.

Notes

For a thicker sauce, consider adding a cornstarch slurry during cooking. Taste before serving to adjust sweetness.
