Ingredients

For the sauce

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can crushed tomatoes (28 oz) For a rich base
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Salt and pepper to taste Adjust according to preference
  • Fresh basil leaves (for garnish, optional) Adds freshness when serving

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a medium saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
  • Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 1-2 minutes until fragrant—be careful not to burn it!
  • Pour in the crushed tomatoes, stirring to combine with the garlic.
  • Add dried oregano, sugar, salt, and pepper. Stir well, allowing the flavors to marry.
  • Let the sauce simmer on low heat for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. The longer it simmers, the richer the flavors will become!
  • Once the sauce has thickened slightly, it’s ready to be slathered on your pizza or stored for later use!

Notes

For best flavor, add fresh basil just before serving. You can add red pepper flakes for heat or a dash of balsamic vinegar for a tangy twist. If you have leftover sauce, store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw and reheat on the stovetop before serving.
