  • 1 can (15 ounces) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 4-5 cloves garlic, minced Use fresh garlic for the best flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano Feel free to experiment with herbs.
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (optional) Add for subtle sweetness, to taste.

Preparation

  • In a medium saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
  • Once hot, add the minced garlic and sauté for about 1-2 minutes until fragrant. Be careful not to let it burn!
  • Pour in the can of crushed tomatoes. Stir well to combine with the garlic.
  • Add the oregano, basil, salt, and black pepper. Stir to incorporate the seasonings. If preferred, add the sugar at this point.
  • Reduce the heat and let the sauce simmer for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Once the sauce has reached your desired thickness and flavor, taste and adjust seasonings if needed.
  • Let the sauce cool before using it immediately or storing it in an airtight container for later use.

Notes

Store leftover sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week. To freeze, pour the cooled sauce into freezer-safe bags or containers for up to three months. Reheat gently in a saucepan over low heat.
