Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground turkey (Halal-certified)
  • 2 cans white beans, drained and rinsed 15 oz each
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cans green chiles, diced 4 oz each
  • 4 cups chicken broth ensure Halal-certified
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large pot, heat a drizzle of olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and sauté for about 5 minutes until softened.
  • Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
  • Add the ground turkey to the pot. Use a wooden spoon to break it apart and cook until it’s no longer pink, about 7-9 minutes.
  • Drain any excess fat if needed.
  • Stir in the drained white beans, green chiles, chicken broth, cumin, oregano, salt, and pepper. Mix everything well.
  • Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and let it simmer for approximately 30-40 minutes to meld all those wonderful flavors.
  • After simmering, taste the chili and adjust seasonings as necessary.
  • If you prefer a thicker chili, mash some of the beans with the back of a spoon to create a creamier texture.
  • Ladle into bowls and serve hot with your favorite toppings, such as fresh herbs or yogurt.

Notes

Substitutions for ground turkey can include ground chicken or beef, as long as they are Halal. For added heat, incorporate a chopped jalapeño during sautéing. Avoid overcrowding the pot for even cooking and allow ample time for simmering to develop flavor. This dish can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
