  • 4 medium-sized russet potatoes Best for achieving a crispy texture.
  • 1 small onion (optional) Grate for added flavor.

  • 1/4 inch vegetable oil or butter For frying.

Preparation

  • Peel the russet potatoes and grate them using a box grater or food processor.
  • Spread the grated potatoes on a kitchen towel or paper towels and squeeze out as much moisture as possible.
  • Place the drained potatoes in a bowl, add salt and pepper, and mix well.

Cooking

  • In a large skillet, heat about 1/4 inch of vegetable oil or butter over medium-high heat.
  • Add the grated potato mixture into the skillet in an even layer and press down slightly with a spatula.
  • Cook without stirring for about 5-7 minutes until golden brown.
  • Flip the hash browns in sections to cook the other side, adding extra oil if needed.
  • Transfer the cooked hash browns to a paper towel-lined plate to absorb excess oil and serve immediately.

Notes

For best results, cook in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan, and consider experimenting with toppings like cheese, salsa, or herbs.
