Ingredients
  

Chicken Marinade

  • 4 pieces chicken (legs, thighs, or breasts)
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk (or plain yogurt) Halal alternative
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper optional for heat

Coating Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper optional for heat

Frying Oil

  • as needed Oil for frying (vegetable or canola oil)

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Rinse the chicken pieces under cold water and pat them dry with paper towels.
  • In a bowl, combine the buttermilk (or yogurt) with salt, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper if desired. Add the chicken to the bowl and ensure every piece is well coated. Cover and marinate for at least 30 minutes, or up to overnight in the fridge.
  • In another bowl, whisk together the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper.
  • Pour sufficient oil into a large skillet to submerge the chicken halfway. Heat the oil over medium-high heat until it reaches about 350°F (175°C).

Coating and Frying

  • Remove the chicken pieces from the marinade, allowing any excess to drip off. Dredge each piece in the seasoned flour until fully coated.
  • Carefully place the chicken pieces into the hot oil, frying in batches if necessary. Fry for about 12-15 minutes on each side or until golden brown and fully cooked through.
  • Transfer the chicken to a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil, and let them rest for a few minutes.

Serving

  • Plate the Golden Crunchy Chicken Fried Chicken and serve with your favorite sides.

Notes

For a lighter coating, add a bit of cornstarch to your flour mix. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for about 10-15 minutes.
