  • 1 loaf day-old bread (Challah or brioche works best) Sturdier bread absorbs custard without becoming soggy.
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ cup maple syrup
  • pinch salt

Optional Toppings

  • to taste fresh berries or sliced bananas For a flavorful topping.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Slice the loaf of bread into cubes and let it sit out to dry slightly.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, maple syrup, and salt.
  • Place the bread cubes in a greased 9x13 baking dish and pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread.
  • Press down gently on the bread pieces to ensure they soak up the custard.
  • Optionally cover the dish and chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour or overnight.

Baking

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Bake uncovered for 30-35 minutes until the top is golden brown and the custard is set.
  • Allow to cool slightly before serving and add your favorite toppings.

Notes

For best results, use day-old bread and consider letting the dish chill overnight. Experiment with flavors and toppings to suit your taste.
