Ingredients

  • 4 large onions sliced thin
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 3 cups beef or vegetable broth
  • 1 teaspoon thyme dried or fresh
  • salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 cup Gruyère cheese grated
  • 1 cup French bread cubed
  • fresh parsley for garnish, optional

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to ensure that your casserole cooks evenly.
  • In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat and add the sliced onions, cooking and stirring frequently for about 15-20 minutes, or until they turn golden brown and caramelized.
  • Once the onions are caramelized, pour in the broth and sprinkle in the thyme, then season with salt and black pepper to taste and allow it to simmer for about 5 minutes to let the flavors meld together.
  • In a large casserole dish, layer half of the cubed bread, followed by the onion mixture, and then top it with half of the grated cheese, then repeat the layering until all ingredients are used up, finishing with cheese on top.
  • Transfer the casserole to your preheated oven and bake for about 25-30 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  • Once baked, let it cool for a few minutes, garnish with chopped parsley for a pop of color, then serve warm and enjoy.
