Ingredients

For the Dough

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

For Frying and Serving

  • Oil for frying vegetable or canola
  • Powdered sugar for dusting powdered sugar

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  • In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract.
  • Gradually mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, stirring until a soft dough forms.

Kneading and Cutting

  • Lightly flour a clean surface and turn the dough out onto it. Knead gently for about 1-2 minutes until smooth.
  • Roll out the dough to about 1/2 inch thick.
  • Use a sharp knife or a dough cutter to cut the dough into squares or rectangles, about 2 inches wide.

Frying

  • In a large, deep skillet, heat about 2-3 inches of oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
  • Carefully drop the cut beignet pieces into the hot oil, frying in batches for about 1-2 minutes on each side until they are golden brown.
  • Use a slotted spoon to remove them, and drain on paper towels.

Serving

  • While still warm, dust generously with powdered sugar before serving.
  • Pair your delicious beignets with coffee, hot chocolate, or your favorite fruit preserves!

Notes

Fry in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan. Check the oil temperature for perfect beignets!
