Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 cup vegetable oil or shortening Can use either vegetable oil or shortening.
  • 3/4 cup warm water Approximately; adjust as needed.

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and salt.
  • Add the oil or shortening and mix until crumbly.
  • Gradually pour in the warm water, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  • On a lightly floured surface, knead the dough for about 2-3 minutes until it's smooth and elastic.
  • Cover it with a damp cloth and let it rest for 15-20 minutes.

Cooking

  • After resting, divide the dough into 8-10 equal portions and shape them into small balls.
  • On a floured surface, take one ball, flatten it slightly, and roll it out into a thin circle about 8 inches in diameter.
  • Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the tortilla for about 30 seconds on each side or until you see golden brown spots and it puffs up.
  • Repeat for the remaining portions.
  • Stack your tortillas on a plate, covering them with a clean kitchen towel to keep them soft.

Notes

To keep tortillas soft, wrap in a clean kitchen towel or store in an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheat on a skillet or microwave.
