  • 4 medium Potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium Onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cups Heavy cream
  • 2 cups Cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 2 tablespoons Butter, for greasing
  • 3 tablespoons Flour, for thickening
  • 1 teaspoon Salt, to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon Black pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon Garlic powder (optional)
  • Paprika (optional, for garnish)

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter to prevent sticking.
  • Begin by placing half of the potato slices in the bottom of the prepared dish. Sprinkle half of the chopped onions over the potatoes.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the heavy cream, flour, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder until smooth.
  • Stir half of the shredded cheddar cheese into the cream mixture, then pour half of this sauce over the potatoes and onions.
  • Repeat the layering process with the remaining potatoes, onions, and the rest of the cheese sauce.

Baking

  • Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.

Serving

  • Let it cool for 5 minutes before serving. Sprinkle with paprika if desired!

Notes

Slice potatoes evenly for the best texture. Mix different types of cheese for a unique flavor. You can prepare the dish in advance and store it in the refrigerator. Allow to cool slightly before serving to set the layers.
