Ingredients

For the dough

  • 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour (extra for dusting) Can substitute with whole wheat flour for a whole grain twist.
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (about 110°F) Temperature is important; too hot can kill the yeast.
  • 2 teaspoons instant yeast Ensure freshness for best results.
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (optional, for a hint of sweetness)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for added flavor)

Instructions

Mix the Dough

  • In a large bowl, combine warm water, instant yeast, and sugar. Let it stand for about 5 minutes until slightly frothy.
  • Add flour and salt to the bowl. Stir with a wooden spoon until the mixture is well combined. It will look shaggy.

Knead

  • Dust your work surface lightly with flour and transfer the dough. Knead gently for about 5 minutes until it’s somewhat smooth.

First Rise

  • Place the dough back in the bowl and cover with a clean kitchen towel. Allow it to rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours or until it doubles in size.

Shape the Loaf

  • Once the dough has risen, gently punch it down to release the air. Shape it into a round loaf on a floured surface.

Second Rise

  • Place the shaped dough on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover it again with the towel, and let it rise for another hour.

Preheat Oven

  • Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C).

Score and Bake

  • Just before putting the dough into the oven, use a sharp knife to make a few shallow cuts on the top. This helps with oven spring.
  • Bake for about 30-35 minutes or until the crust is golden brown.

Cool

  • Let your beautiful loaf cool on a rack before slicing it. Enjoy it fresh or toasted!
