Ingredients
  

Dough Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups warm water (about 110°F) Make sure the temperature is right to activate the yeast.
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar Helps to activate the yeast.
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons) Ensure it is fresh for the dough to rise.
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour All-purpose flour works best for this recipe.
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Boiling and Baking

  • 1/4 cup baking soda Used for boiling the pretzel bites.
  • 1 large egg Beaten, for brushing on pretzel bites.
  • as needed pinch Coarse sea salt For sprinkling on top before baking.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it foam for about 5 minutes.
  • Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture and mix until a dough forms. Knead for about 5 minutes until smooth.
  • Let the dough rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Cooking

  • Preheat the oven to 450°F (232°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Boil 4 cups of water with the baking soda in a large pot.
  • Divide the dough into bite-sized pieces and shape each one into a pretzel shape.
  • Boil each piece in the baking soda water for about 30 seconds, then remove and place on the baking sheet.
  • Brush each pretzel with a beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse salt.
  • Bake for about 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.

Notes

Serve warm with mustard, cheese dip, or sweet dips like chocolate or caramel sauce. Store leftover pretzel bites in an airtight container for up to two days, or freeze for longer storage.
