  • 2 pounds potatoes (Yukon gold or russets) Choose creamy potatoes for best results.
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese Freshly shredded cheese melts better.
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • to taste salt and pepper
  • 1/4 cup green onions for garnish (optional) Add for extra flavor.

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Peel and slice the potatoes thinly, aiming for about 1/4-inch thickness.
  • In a bowl, combine sour cream, milk, garlic powder, onion powder, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Stir until smooth.

Layering and Baking

  • In a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes, then spoon half of the cheese sauce over the top, followed by half of the cheddar cheese.
  • Repeat the layering with the remaining ingredients.
  • Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for about 45 minutes.
  • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is bubbly and golden.

Serving

  • Let cool for a few minutes, then garnish with chopped green onions if desired. Serve and enjoy!

Notes

For a deeper flavor, consider adding cooked bacon bits or a sprinkle of chili powder. Store leftovers in an airtight container; they can be refrigerated for up to 3-5 days. Reheat in the oven for best texture.
