Ingredients

Pie Crust

  • 1 each refrigerated pie crust (9 inches; can be homemade for added flavor)

Apple Filling

  • 6 cups peeled and sliced apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work wonders)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (to help absorb moisture)

Crumb Topping

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  • If using a refrigerated crust, unroll it and fit it into a 9-inch pie dish, pressing it against the sides. Trim any excess crust hanging over the edges.

Making the Filling

  • In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, lemon juice, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour. Toss gently until the apples are well coated.
  • Pour this mixture into the crust, spreading it evenly.

Creating the Crumb Topping

  • In another bowl, mix the flour, brown sugar, oats, and softened butter until crumbly.
  • Sprinkle this mixture generously over the apple layer in the pie crust.

Baking

  • Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for 45-50 minutes until the apples are bubbling and the topping is golden brown.
  • Check the pie halfway through—if the edges of the crust brown too quickly, cover them gently with foil.

Cooling and Serving

  • Allow the pie to cool for about 15 minutes before serving. This will help the filling set.
  • Serve warm with a scoop of ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.

Notes

Apple Choices: Mixing different types of apples can add depth to the flavor. Consider using a combination of tart and sweet apples for the best results. Make it Gluten-Free: Substitute the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free blend if needed. Timing is Key: Keep an eye on your pie as it bakes. If the topping starts to brown too quickly, cover it with foil to prevent burning. Make Ahead: You can prepare the filling a day in advance and store it in the fridge. Just assemble and bake it when you’re ready!
