Ingredients

For the Fries

  • 2 cups mashed potatoes (homemade or leftover) Ensure they're smooth.
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour if preferred)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • to taste Salt
  • to taste Pepper
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional for added flavor) Skip for vegan option.
  • Oil for frying or baking (olive oil, vegetable oil, or your favorite halal oil) Use as needed.

Instructions

Preparing the Mixture

  • If you’re starting from scratch, peel and boil your potatoes until tender, then mash until smooth. Allow them to cool slightly.
  • In a mixing bowl, add your mashed potatoes, flour, garlic powder, onion powder, and salt and pepper. Mix until well combined. If using, fold in the Parmesan cheese for that extra kick.

Shaping the Fries

  • Using your hands, take a small scoop of the potato mixture and shape it into fry-like sticks, about the size of regular fries.

Cooking the Fries

  • If baking, preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  • Place your formed fries on the baking tray. Drizzle with oil and turn to coat. Bake for 15-20 minutes, flipping halfway through until golden and crispy.
  • Alternatively, heat about an inch of oil in a pan over medium heat. Fry the potato sticks in batches, careful not to overcrowd. Fry until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  • Once cooked, place on a paper towel to drain excess oil.

Serving

  • Plate your Crispy Mashed Potato Fries immediately while they’re still warm and crispy. Enjoy with your favorite dipping sauces!

Notes

For a gluten-free version, opt for gluten-free flour. Ensure your potato mixture isn’t too wet; otherwise, the fries won’t hold their shape. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
