For the Onion Rings

  • 1 large onion, sliced into rings
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour For breading
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs For the coating
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar or mozzarella) Use your favorite cheese
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 cup milk or buttermilk
  • Oil for frying Use enough for shallow frying

Instructions

Preparation

  • Begin by slicing your large onion into rings. Aim for an even thickness, about 1/4 inch.
  • In one bowl, whisk together the flour, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  • In a second bowl, pour the milk or buttermilk.
  • In a third bowl, add the breadcrumbs combined with shredded cheese.
  • Dip each onion ring first into the flour mixture, then into the milk or buttermilk, and finally into the breadcrumbs and cheese mixture.
  • In a large frying pan, heat enough oil over medium-high heat for shallow frying.
  • Fry the onion rings in batches for about 2-3 minutes per side or until golden brown.
  • Use a slotted spoon to remove the chips from the oil and let them drain on a paper towel-lined plate.

Notes

Leftover chips can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days. For longer storage, freeze on a baking tray and transfer to a freezer bag once firm. Reheat in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 10-15 minutes.
