  • 1 loaf French bread, cut into cubes
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk Whole or low-fat milk can be used.
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 pinch salt
  • additional granulated sugar for topping

Preparation

  • Cut your French bread into cubes and place them in a greased baking dish.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
  • Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes, ensuring all pieces are soaked. Lightly push down any floating bread.
  • Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or up to overnight.
  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Baking

  • Remove the cover from the dish and sprinkle additional granulated sugar evenly over the top.
  • Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
  • Allow the casserole to cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

For added richness, experiment with different types of bread like brioche or challah. Consider adding fruits or nuts for extra flavor. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
