  • 4 large Potatoes, thinly sliced (Yukon Gold or Russet recommended)
  • 2 cups Heavy Cream
  • 2 cups Sharp Cheddar Cheese, grated
  • 1 medium Onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons Butter For greasing and making the sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Flour For thickening the sauce

  • to taste Pepper

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with a bit of butter.

Making the Sauce

  • In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add minced garlic, and sauté for about 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  • Stir in the flour and cook for another minute before slowly whisking in the heavy cream.
  • Bring to a simmer, then mix in 1 cup of cheddar cheese until melted. Season with salt and pepper.

Layering

  • Begin layering the sliced potatoes at the bottom of the baking dish.
  • Sprinkle some of the sliced onions on top.
  • Pour a third of the cheese sauce over the layer.
  • Repeat the process until you have filled the dish.
  • The final layer should be potatoes covered with remaining cheese sauce and the last cup of cheddar sprinkled on top.

Baking

  • Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  • Remove the foil and bake for another 15-20 minutes, until the top is bubbly and golden brown.

Serving

  • Let the dish cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy every creamy, cheesy bite!

Notes

For best results, use a mix of potatoes or experiment with cheese varieties like Gruyère. Make ahead by assembling a day before and refrigerating.
